Tech Rebounds in 2024: Here are Europe’s 25 Most Active Angel Investors Revitalising the Start-Up Scene

Published: 23 Feb 2025
After a rocky spell, Europe's tech sector witnessed an impressive revival in 2024, invigorated by the activity of fervent angel investors.

Riding on the back of resurgence in Europe’s tech scene in 2024, the region saw a tremendous rise in angel investment. Amidst this renaissance, the one angel investor who stood out was Thibaud Elzière, an entrepreneur who had significantly lent his support to more than 100 companies. His investment portfolio from the past year boasts significant stakes across various domains, from artificial intelligence (AI) to spacetech and a multitude of verticals in between.

Close on Elzière’s heels and carving a niche for herself is Roxanne Varza, the director of Paris’s bustling startup incubator Station F. As the second busiest angel investor in Europe, Varza held the distinction of being the only woman on the list. Her investments were predominantly in AI, with newcomers such as H, Dottxt, and Adaptive ML among the recipients.

Collectively, the top 25 angels funded a whopping 139 companies. Paris-based automation specialist Twin Labs found favour with multiple big-ticket angel investors. Besides Elzière, the company also attracted the interest of DeepMind’s Mehdi Ghissassi and Dataiku cofounder Florian Douetteau.

In the competitive world of angel investing, a single successful punt can change the game. Elzière’s impressive portfolio includes investments in AI unicorn Hugging Face and productivity software app Notion, among others. Simultaneously, Varza leveraged her strong foothold in the European tech ecosystem to identify and back potential breakouts.

As the tech beat in Europe strengthens its rhythm, the all-important role of angel investors in shaping this upbeat narrative becomes even more crucial. The tenacity, foresight, and generosity of these angels are, undoubtedly, vital to the blossoming of the tech and start-up scene across Europe.
