100 Young Sailors Successfully Conquer Rough Seas at Paignton Sailing Club’s Training Extravaganza

In the unforgiving wintry conditions at Paignton Sailing Club, a group of about 100 young sailors embarked on a thrilling journey of skill-building and endurance. As part of the Southwest Youth Sailing Academy’s (SWYSA) winter training series, these determined youths faced icy winds and towering waves in the pursuit of maritime mastery.

On Saturday, the Topper fleet set sail under 15-knot winds which grew fiercer as the day progressed. This courage-testing session was specifically designed to hone the sailors’ race tactics in preparation for the looming end-of-season regatta in April. However, the expansive exercise also evolved to encompass proficiency in wave technique, as they were met with an imposing swell.

The efforts of veteran coaching teams, led by prominent figures like Duncan West, Stuart Jones, Izzy Cramp, and Teddy Dunn, didn’t go unnoticed. Their adaptive approach to tailoring sessions to suit the unpredictable conditions showcased resilience and dedication that echoed throughout the event.

More experienced members of the SWYSA’s Topper fleet are now eager to return for a full weekend of intensive training from March 15-16. This praiseworthy initiative taken by Paignton Sailing Club also highlights its prominent role as an engaged host throughout the winter season, supporting the blossoming of young sailors across the region.
