Noted Author China Miéville Defends Science Fiction from Criticism of its Readership
One of the leading voices in speculative fiction, China Miéville, is not one to shy away from defending the literary world he so masterfully navigates. His latest focal point? The unfair criticism of science fiction due to its perceived ‘bad readers’. In a world visualising alien invasions, dystopian futures, and advanced technology, governed by intergalactic political affairs, it is unfortunately all too common for some readers to misunderstand the complexities or misinterpret the messages conveyed - but should the genre suffer as a result? Miéville emphatically dares to disagree so. Miéville implores us not to blame the world of science fiction for those amongst its readers who may not fully grasp its intricacies. The value of the genre, he insists, is undeniably independent from its readership’s comprehension. He asserts that ‘bad reading’ does not equate to a ‘bad genre’. His defense is a call to arms for literature lovers everywhere: no genre of writing should be degraded, undervalued or discredited based on its readers. Each fiction realm, from the high fantasy worlds to the infinity of space, holds its unique value. It is the responsibility of the literary community as a whole, Miéville points out, to read, appreciate, understand and most importantly, defend our diverse literary landscapes.
