Norrsken, a Swedish impact foundation, has pledged €300m for European startups wagering on AI to grapple with some of the world's most significant issues.

Artificial Intelligence (AI), with its predicted potential to revolutionise societies, has stoked the interest of investors worldwide. Significant among these financiers is the Swedish impact foundation, Norrsken, which has earmarked an impressive €300m specifically to support European startups leveraging AI’s transformative potential. This sum is to be managed through Norrsken’s diverse investment initiatives, including Norrsken VC, Launcher, and Accelerator.

This €300m commitment, which accounts for a substantial portion of the total $1bn managed fund currently in Norrsken’s coffer, will be channelled primarily towards AI startups with focused mandates in climate, health, food, education, and broader societal issues.

The investment trend, over the years, shows a remarkable surge in funding AI startups, with the funding in 2024 alone surpassing $100bn worldwide. A significant chunk of these investments are made in European startups with AI at their core.

Norrsken has shown unwavering enthusiasm for AI by putting considerable stakes in sectors that bank on this technology, including the likes of the battery factory company, Northvolt. Norrsken’s recent commitment stems from a firm belief in AI’s potential, envisioning it as a panacea capable of optimising energy systems, accelerating drug discovery, and enhancing diagnostic accuracy in healthcare, to name a few.

Furthermore, by fuelling an AI-engineered agricultural revolution and fostering new material discovery ideal for net-zero construction, Norrsken is betting on AI to actualise its ambitious global impact strategy. For Norrsken and its cohort of AI-powered startups, this commitment does not just signify a robust financial backing but an unflinching reminder: The future is AI, but more importantly, the future is now.
