European Union Firm in Implementing AI Legislation Amidst Calls for Delay from Global Tech Leaders

Published: 04 Jul 2025
Despite strong opposition from global tech powerhouses, the European Union remains steadfast in its schedule to implement landmark AI legislation.

The European Union (EU) isn’t one to back down easily, even when facing opposition from the world’s largest tech companies. Among the dissenters are industry giants Alphabet, Meta, Mistral AI, and ASML, which have spearheaded a concerted effort in urging the European Commission to delay implementing its AI Act. Their argument? The AI rules could dampen Europe’s competitiveness in the rapidly evolving AI landscape.

Despite these serious concerns, the EU has boldly chosen to stick to its timeline. Thomas Regnier, spokesperson for the European Commission, underscores the EU’s determination by firmly stating that there will be no stopping, no grace period, and no pause in implementing the AI regulation.

Moreover, another category of AI apps like chatbots, considered ’limited risk,’ come with lighter transparency obligations. The rollout of the AI Act, which began last year, is expected to occur in a staggered fashion, with full enforcement expected by mid-2026. Thus, the EU is marching ahead, unperturbed and unswerving in its commitment to regulate AI, marking a new chapter in the global AI governance narrative.
