Bringing the Power of AI to Your Pocket: Google Releases an App for Unleashing Local AI Models on Mobile Devices

Published: 31 May 2025
In an effort to democratize access to AI tools, Google has unveiled a new app, dubbed Google AI Edge Gallery, which allows users to download and run AI models on their mobile devices.

Stepping into a new era of machine learning, Google has quietly introduced an app designed to take artificial intelligence beyond the digital cloud, and directly into the hands of users. Known as Google AI Edge Gallery, the app enables users to explore, download, and implement a variety of publicly accessible AI models furnished by Hugging Face, an AI development platform. Whether the user wants to generate images, respond to queries, or create and modify code, the app promises a bevy of capabilities that can be utilized offline on supported mobile devices.

Promising, among other things, AI tasks such as ‘Ask Image’ and ‘AI Chat’, the app presents a ‘Prompt Lab’ for users to initiate ‘single-turn’ tasks. These could range from summarizing to rephrasing text - all powered by the models. Google does caution, however, that performance could vary depending on the hardware’s prowess and model size.

The tech giant invites the larger developer community to test and provide feedback on the Google AI Edge Gallery experience. With the app being distributed under an Apache 2.0 license, it can find application in assorted contexts, regardless of its commercial nature.
